Chevy Truck Restoration Help
Here I have to put together many resources to help restore your Chevy or GMC Pickup. There are sources of tools and parts for other makes and models here as well, but we will focus on GM here.
Let me start by saying there is no substitute for "expert" advice. I am talking about shop manuals. While we are all familiar with Chilton's, and Haynes, and they do cover quite a bit of repairs, they are nothing in comparison to a Factory Service Manual. In fact, you have no idea what you are missing unless you have leafed through one. Years ago, Factory Service Manuals were very hard to come by. I got one about 10 years ago, at a local swap meet, and paid $30 for it. The guy knew he had me by the ........ since he had it, and I wanted it. He knew I had no place else to go for it. Well, all that has changed now thanks to the Internet, but especially thanks to E Bay ! I just picked up a 1982 GM Light Duty Truck factory Service Manual for..... get this..... $17.00 ! It includes the wiring diagrams for the model year too, which the 1977 one I bought for $30, has no wiring in it. Back then, wiring was a separate book. In fact, just last week I had a bid in on a 1977 Wiring Manual, but it got to be more than I wanted to spend at this time. The bidding was up to $19.
The Factory Service Manual is the first part you need to buy for your restoration of ANY vehicle. If you do your own repairs, then having one is a must.
GM Light Duty Truck Service Manuals cover the following models: C/10, C/20, C/30, K/10, K/20, K/30, P/10, P/20, P/30. (C= 2wd pickups, cab n' chassis, and Blazer / Suburban, K= 4wd pickups, cab n' chassis, and Blazer / Suburban, and the P model line is Chevy Vans. GM considers anything 1 ton or under to be a "Light Duty" vehicle.
I used to think E Bay was for trading and selling Beanie Babies, baseball cards, autographs, and the like. My wife has bought antique tea cups....
I was AMAZED at the Automotive Section. Last week, I won the bid on a 1977 GM Dealer Album. This includes all prices for all 1977 GM cars and trucks, the price and part number of every option available, every option catalog available, paint chip samples, seat material samples, all of the sales brochures for the 1977 model year, and much more.
So if you plan on restoring a car or truck, get your hands on a factory service manual, you will not be disappointed!
These are the REAL books you NEED.
